We don't need to echo, we have a voice!

Before leaving Nz one evening I saw a show titled 'Britain got Talent' - I am sure its one of many talent shows on mainstream television networks.
Coming from a background of watching very little television, some shows still bring an element of surprise to me that people actually enjoy watching certain things week after week, day after day.  To think that year upon year millions of people tune into a talent show in search of the one with the 'voice' or 'talent''. Surly people must grow tired of watching the same reality concept programmes … yet it seems the opposite is true.

The power of having a voice is something beyond … it brings so much identity, meaning, expression, and at core been able to communicate ourselves to others.
Then come to think about, very few things stick with us longer than a voice. We can go for periods of time without hearing it, then know instantly be able to identify a voice by a "hello".
They can bring so much comfort, bring back memories and also enflame the heart.
Each voice has a unique vocal signature, voices are memorable, moving, custom built and creatively constructed. God's beauty can be seen in the human body, which is beyond my comprehension by its construction; to think that the shape of our skulls and pallet combined with our vocal folds, all merge in a glorious symphony that is our voice.. WOW!

I wonder if in a world so consumed with finding the next 'voice' or 'talent' that many of us have failed to find our own….

I read stories about people's calling, vocations or experience of trying to develop into something they are not and wonder for some people its just not the right time, possibly unaware of their motivation, even when they have something to say, but have no one really listening to them … there is a message in this itself. I think there's a picture of what many of us go through in our pursuit of Gods calling and each picture is different and unique.
I know that it crosses my mind, I want to step out into what God has for me and become a voice in our generation.

Yet in all truth and reality, its easy to lose your voice! How do we find our voice - I think the best way to find our voice is to find our Fathers.

"My sheep listen to my voice, I know them and they follow me"
(John 10:27)
- can be translated into "find your Father, find your voice!"

When looking at the television show like 'Britain got Talent' it makes me question why someone would use their voice to 'echo' that of another. Do people treasure originality, or even seek it. We don't need to echo what others have already said, done or produced, at times yes its good to reinforce what those before us have gifted, yet essentially we should take ownership and make it ours too. To a certain point no two peoples vocations are the same as they might take on the same title yet the actual essence is unique to that individual - we are all unique gifts as we can see by no two finger print the same. Two teachers will teach the same content yet have different methods, different emphasis, different deliveries - different voices.
I can see this as a challenge, on one hand we want to be intentional about learning from those we respect, but we should never become so determined to 'sound' like someone else. That would reduce us to a mere echo and why should we need to echo what others have already said cluttering the airspace of our hearts!

Bottom line is that we don't need to echo, we all have a voice! If we lose it we should embrace the treasure that Jesus have given us 'find your father, find your voice"
